The 5th Annual Disability & Health Symposium is next Monday, May 14th at Lansing Community College West Campus. Highlights include:
The University of Michigan and Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is introducing the Cerebral Palsy Research Consortium of Michigan (CPRCoM) - this is the first cerebral palsy (CP) registry of its kind in the state of Michigan. The aim of the CPRCoM is to advance knowledge about the health and quality of life for persons with CP through cutting-edge research. The CPRCoM has been approved by the University of Michigan's Institutional Review Board (HUM00034648).
The University of Michigan has established community partnerships with the United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living. These partnerships offer opportunities to connect those with CP and the broader community to researchers so that together we can learn more about prevention, treatments, and outcomes related to CP.
To learn more about the CPRCoM visit www.med.umich.edu/pmr/research/cprcom.htm or contact the CPRCoM by email at or by phone at 734-936-6023

Are you one of the 3,000 people whose Home Help Services was cut?
Help may be available.
Since October 2011, the Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS) has terminated Home Help Services to roughly 3,000 individuals who may be at risk of institutionalization, homelessness, or other harm because DHS will no longer pay for someone to help them with shopping, housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation or taking medication.
Several advocacy organizations are working to identify ways that the Home Help cuts can be reversed, so that people with disabilities who need this help will receive it. If you or someone you know has been affected by these cuts, advocates at the Michigan Poverty Law Program, Michigan Protection and Advocacy, and the Center for Civil Justice are interested in speaking with you. Please call Alison Hirschel at 517-394-2985 x 231 if you are willing to talk about the effects of the cuts on you or your family member. All calls will be kept confidential.
The cuts were caused by a Department of Community Health decision to stop Home Help for people who need help with the activities listed above, but who do not need help with other activities such as grooming, bathing, dressing, transferring or toileting. The cuts have been “phased in” as people receiving Home Help Services had their cases reviewed. The cuts were approved by the Michigan Legislature as part of the Medicaid budget for fiscal year 2012.
